Delain Welcomes Otto!

We would like to introduce to you with pride our new fulltime Delain-member, Otto ‘the baron’ Schimmelpenninck van der Oije (Detonation), who will replace Rob on the bass. We are very happy to welcome Otto to the Delain family. Starting from our upcoming UK tour, he will join Delain live on stage. We will update our member profiles soon. Until then, you can get to know Otto by visiting his myspace.

We would like to thank Rob for his years of dedication, musical craftmanship and the good times we had throughout the years. Rob’s official last show with delain will be at the Mezz in Breda (08-04-2010), we’ll make this show one hell of a party in his honour!

Gig newsupdate

Our next show this satuday in Atak, Enschede (NL) is sold out. Besides that we are happy to announce that we will do yet another show in France this may. Check out our showdates here. More news is comming up soon.

A new chapter

We've got some big news; Recently we started working on our new third album, which we hope to release this year. Together with Roadrunner we are working on extending our cooperation, and together we're aiming for bigger, better, and heavier then ever before. An external producer, a real orchestra, and much more exciting stuff will be involved. We will work more extensively on Delain during this process, and we are very much looking forward to it. We will keep you informed with moviesamples and blogs.
However because of Delain's development the last couple of years it's becoming more timeconsuming for all of us. That's why our band mate Rob has decided to leave the band later this year. You can find his comment here on his myspace. We will communicate more about his departure and his last show later on. Together with Rob we are already organizing his replacement. If you are also interested to audition you can contact us here.

UK: April Rain hits the charts!

On the first week of April Rain's release in the UK, the album hit both the regular and alternative charts. In the alternative charts April Rain even reached #14!

Delain For Haiti Auction - update

Today we've added the final item for the Delain for Haiti auction. We're auctioning various items to raise money for Haiti's quake victims. Every penny made with the Delain for Haiti auction will go to giro 555. The items are auctioned here. Also, the auction will end a little bit later: untill Sunday February 7th. We hope you will help us raise money for Haiti.

April Rain released in the UK!!

Delain today released their second album April Rain in the UK! You can now pick up the album not only digitally but on CD- from your local record store and online right here.

Viva Mexico!

We are very happy to announce Delain is going to play in Mexico for the first time. After our US show in Atlanta we will fly to Mexico-City to play at the Circo Volador on September 13.

Delain For Haiti Auction

Delain is auctioning various items to raise money for for Haiti's quake victims. Every penny made with the Delain For Haiti project goes to Giro 555.

WATT show Rotterdam

2010 will start with a bang for Delain with the gig in WATT Rotterdam! To celebrate the first gig of the year we have some special features for you. Looking back on 2009

Looking back on 2009 on the last day of the year makes us realize what a rollercoaster ride this year has been for Delain. With the release of our second album April Rain early this year, the amazing club shows, festivals and tours that followed, it’s indeed not easy to pick highlights. However, that’s exactly what we tried to do in this blog. We hope you enjoy looking back on 2009 with us.

Ewout

Well my highlight of 2009 is obviously joining Delain and touring with Sonata Arctica within two weeks of eachother:). And I honestly have to say I loved every minute of every gig in every town we played. Besides the warmth of the Delainclan, who have been and still are so great, all you crazy ass guys 'n girls out there are the bringers of that joy to me. Every cheer and every smile, every metalhorn, hug and kiss, every banner, talk and comment you guys gave me in the last two months makes me feel priviliged to be a Delainian and play for you and share our music and inspiration. And that's what i'm planning to do in 2010. Horns up and have a blasting New Year!

Hey all ! The recording and releasing the April Rain album is one of my highlights, this was my first Delain album and it was great! The Lowlands show was very special for me as well, I was there a couple of times, not as artist ;-) back then I wanted to ehm... "live there for ever" haha, this time it was our turn to play there, that was so amazing! one of the coolest festivals I've ever played at !
We also did a special show in Zwolle with Marco Hietala as guest singer, I am a big Nightwish fan and it was very cool to work with him !

Too many highlights to mention this year! But there were a few moments that made me feel very small especially when I look at the amounts of enthousiastic people we played for and the bands we shared stages with. One example is the show at Waldrock where we played with bands like Mötorhead and Heaven & Hell (read: Black Sabbath) and I had the chance to meet them after the show. Being used to signing posters and records for fans myself became a standard in Delain but this time I was the happy schoolboy! Hehehe! And NO: those records are hanging on my wall at home and are not for sale! ;-)

Actually I’ve got a couple of highlights of 2009. I was very satisfied when we finished the April Rain album. It’s always a big moment, hearing the final mix of the work you spent so much time and energy on. It feels really good to hear it all come together in the end. Besides that a couple of gigs I will not forget. We played at the Lowlands festival this year, which is my favorite festival anyway. The show was very enjoyable and the crowd was great (and big) too! And last but not least, playing live together with Marco at our church gig in my hometown. I will not forget those experiences.

2009 has been, though rough at some points, a great and crazy ride! The events that followed upon the release of our second album April Rain were many, and awesome. I still remember the excitement of seeing our album entering the charts on #14! The excitement of 5 minutes before our sold out release party, the excitement of walking onto the stage I’ve only been looking at as a visitor for years and years (Lowlands!) the excitement of exploring a new tourbus for the first time and the excitement of standing on stage with people I greatly admire, both the guest musicians, and my own bandmates. My most recent highlight is the 5 week European tour we’ve done with Sonata Arctica , it was a truly great experience.

We hope you all enjoyed our activities in 2009, we certainly enjoyed having you around! These highlights wouldn’t have been there without our fans and friends! Thank you for that! We hope to see you all next year!

Now, it’s off to 2010, let’s make it bigger, better and louder!

Christmas Metal Symphony

After two days recovering from the great tour with Sonata Arctica, it was time to get ready for a really cool project! I was invited to participate in this years Christmas Metal Symphony. The Christmas Metal Symphony is a huge party in the 013 venue in Tilburg. A great band, great orchestra and lots and lots of guest vocalist all very eager to give the visitors a merry merry christmas. Here's just a little info to let you know what the project is all about (from the CMS website)

Musical-director of Christmas Metal Symphony is JOOST VAN DEN BROEK (keyboardist & songwriter of After Forever) who joined forces with the MAGNUM OPUS ROCKESTRA, conducted by Marcel Heijnen. This impressive classical orchestra is unique in its kind, since all musicians are long term classical trained but real rock and metalfans by heart. It’s safe to say that they will deliver the icing on the Christmaspudding!
The heavy backbone of the show is a fantastic metalband, handpicked by Joost and contains some of the finest Dutch metalartists: KOEN HERFST (Drums / Baggabowz), MARCEL COENEN (Gitaar / Sun Caged), JOHAN VAN STRATUM (Bas / Stream of Passion), FRANK SCHIPHORST (Gitaar / Control Human Delete), JEFFREY REVET (Keyboards / Stream of Passion ) and, of course, Joost van den Broek himself also ..boards.

The guest vocalists this year were Jorn Lande, Udo Dirkschneider, Joakim Broden, Mark Jansen, Mats Leven, Cristina Scabbia, Simone Simons, Damian Wilson and yours truly :)
I had the pleasure of singing a duet with Damian Wilson, the song was a combination of Ayreons 'Into The Black Hole' and Ambeons 'Cold Metal' , also, our own song 'Nothing Left' was performed with the Christmas Metal Orchestra. It was a really cool experience!

By the way, the afterparty was almost as cool as the gig itself :)

Final day of the tour, December 15, Stockholm

Today was the last day of the tour.
We played in snowy cold Stockholm, one final show filled with 'last show pranks' including Sonata playing the Final Countdown through the outro of our song Pristine and some mooning during Sonata's Full Moon, and what was that bunny doing on stage?..... Anyways, as soon as there is some good youtube material on these funny happenings we'll share it with you off course.
In spite of all the pranks today I had a hard time not getting too emotional because this tour was getting to an end. It has been wonderfull! We want to thank Winterborn for being such cool busbuddies, we've had a lot of good times! Also many many thanks to Sonata Arctica who've invited us on this tour which has been so good for us, ánd for giving me the honour of joining them on stage for a duet so many times. Sonata's crew for a helping hand and of course, a million thanks to our own crew; Rik, Maarten, Alejandro, Joyce, Pim, Wendy.. Thanks for making this tour work!

Day 32, December 14th, Gothenburg

Hello Sweden! Today we met the Swedish people for the first time at the Tradgarn venue in Gothenburg.
I'm starting to realise that in two more days this tour is over! And I think I'm not the only one; for some reason there's more drinking and more random sillyness. Only two more days! Let's make today a very good one :)

Day 31, December 13th, Oslo

I woke up just in time for soundcheck today, which is about 4 o clock in the afternoon. Shame on me. Anyways.. :) Today we played at the Sentrum Scene in Oslo, which is a big beautiful venue in the centre of the city. Here are some pictures made during soundcheck with Sonata Arctica (still half asleep)

Day 30, December 12th, Stavanger

It was a long long way to Norway, Stavanger. A whole day in the bus and another boat trip can get you very silly, and eager to get on stage again! We only noticed the huge change in temperature with Holland when we stepped out of the bus in our tshirts. Man it's cold here! where's the snow? We had some time to go out for dinner in between the soundcheck and the gig, which gave us the opportunity to look around a bit. We saw the little lakes and the harbour surrounded by some really cute houses with Christmas lights. Such a pretty city!
We had a nice gig in Stavanger, I tried to learn a few Norwegian words to speak to the audience which was greatly appreciated, and after the show we made some new friends. Our first experience in Norway was a really good one! I'm thinking of planning a holliday here! :)

Day 28, December 10th, Amsterdam

Today we played at the beautiful Paradiso in Amsterdam. It was the first time for Delain to play in this legendary venue. Some of us slept at home today so coming to the venue we also had the pleasure of using good old Dutch public transport again, waking up with a little help from Starbucks.

After the show we had some typical Amsterdam delicacies and started the long drive to Scandinavia.

Day 27, December 9th, Tilburg

Finally FINALLY!
Today we played in Holland for our own favorite Dutchies again. We were very excited to play at 013 again and let Ewout meet (a part of) our Dutch fanbase. Also Rob was back again to join us on stage. We had a really good time playing tonight, and chatting with family and friends afterwards. Thank you for coming everyone!

Day 24, December 6th, Antwerp

Today we played at the Hof ter Lo venue in Antwerp. Early in the morning we took the boat, waved goodbye to our first UK experience and rushed on to Antwerp. It was a special day for our Finnish friends since today is Finland's day of independence. We heard the national anthem being sung several times today :) The gig was really nice. Tim Tronckoe was in the house to shoot some pics; here are some of them!

Day 23, December 5th, Dudley

Today was the last day of our trip to the UK this tour. We played at JB's in Dudley (is it just me or is that the cutest name for a city on earth?) The venue was cool, but there was no dressing room for us so the tourbus was today next to our bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and livingroom also our dressing room. It was really really cosy ;)
Before the show we shot some video material for the Roadrunner UK website, and had a lot of fun doing so. We'll post a link to it as soon as it's online!
The Dudley show was very, very nice. I think I've never banged my head as hard as at this paticular show (pulled a muscle or two, but that was worth it!) After the show we all got some goodies because tonight is the Dutch holliday of Sinterklaas! Even the Finnish seemed to appreciate this fine tradition.
